Delay Throws For Vocals (How, When and Why)
Adding delay throws to your mixing tool kit can bring variety and depth to your vocals. This video explains the basics behind the how’s, what’s, why’s, and maybe’s of creating and using delay throws on vocals.
Today, I used Soundtoys Echoboy: www.soundtoys.com/product/echoboy/ but another great delay plugin is Waves H-Delay: waves.alzt.net/AWOJ5o or stick with your stock DAW delay plugin.

    Just came across this! what a spectacular way to explain it all! I really like how you explained the loudness of the kick and then the loudness of the kick with the bass and finally the entire mix. this has really demystified the vu Meters for a lot of people I can imagine

    I like your explanations, but I do have to admit that my ears remain firmly locked. I can't hear a difference in the snare no matter how many times I listen to it. With transient shapers I can hear the difference, but with the sort of mild adjustments you make here, I just can't recognize it.

    I can't hear the difference in msot of these settings. I'll listen to the snare but can't tell the difference been variation in compression and variation in drummer's performance. I'll try it myself with a drum machine to eliminate that variable!

  • @quantum_ocean
    @quantum_ocean 18 днів тому

    When you flipped the attack from 3ms back to 30ms at (from 23:40) it seems the snare was still dull for a couple hits. Do you think there was some lag in the compressor doings it's job? do you hear that too? Or was it just the drummer's performance? Actualy it sounds less there are less transients at 30ms..or maybe it's just a tone difference. ugg, it's so hard to make sense of this stuff.

  • @quantum_ocean
    @quantum_ocean 18 днів тому

    wow really surprised how dramatic the difference was between Attack 10 vs 30 ms! Usually I'm just picking a number based on shit I read somewhere. BUt after listening twice and focusing on the snare and kick like you said, I could also hear a dramatic difference. I need to get in the habit of using my ears more.

    A few points: - other analog meters existed pre-digital aside from VU meters, such as PPM. - -18VU is confusing and wrong. Analog meters are typically calibrated so that 0VU=4dBu. When this is in a DAW, the default calibration that is often (but not always) used is -18dBFS=0VU=4dBu. This is only when using a sine wave, as dBFS is peak level and dBu is relative to voltage. This also assumes your converters have 22dBu of headroom (this varies between different converters). With 22dBu of headroom, at 4dBu, you have 18dB of headroom (therefore -18dBFS). If your converters have 20dBu of headroom, then you’d adjust the meter to show 16 etc, as they’d have 16dB of headroom above 4dBu. - Many analog modelled plugins use 4dBu=0VU=-18dBFS as their internal reference level. For these plugins, you’d probably want to use a meter set to -18 to make sure you aren’t running into these plugins too hot. For plugins that use -12dBFS=0VU as their reference level, you can adjust your meter to -12 and gain stage accordingly. Always check as plugins vary with their internal reference level (as do converters). This one is more opinion than fact, but I don’t really like the idea of setting kick and bass levels with a meter without knowing what role they have in the arrangement. IMO it’s better to just mix the song and keep an eye on the entire mix level at the mix bus. VU meters generally don’t show much useful information for kicks because they are too transient heavy and short. I think it’d very good practice to use and understand analog and digital levels, and different meter types. The problem is there is SO MUCH bad/contradictory advice online that people misinterpret or just turn a blind eye to.

    @SaraCarterSimplyMixing just curious if you have ever considered mixing using In Ear Monitors vs. over the ear headphones. I am talking about the custom versions most notably. Would be great to get your perspective. As you noted having the weight of headphones on all day is exhausting. I've been using in ear monitors for audio editing although the universal version from Sennheiser. Thanks for your thoughts in advance and all of your great content.

    If I don’t have speakers what are good headphones to do this kind of work with? I’m asking because I’m honesty using this information to mix live inside of a church. I strongly believe that every instrument should sound good no matter what and that later you can do things to your pa and do some sound treatment to help make the room sound better. Because every time I come here and I try something it works. I understand other people are learning and they’ll change things and that’s okay for me because I’d rather someone learn than stay stagnant not trying to see what things sound like. But at least when I mix I can give my best thanks to you and many others

    • @SaraCarterSimplyMixing
      @SaraCarterSimplyMixing 15 днів тому

      Mixing inside a church would require closed back headphones unless you are in a separate room, then you could use open backed. Open backed are better for mixing but if you have to go closed back, I'd look into combining them with something like Sonarworks to get a balanced sound. DT770 Pro's are good closed backs. Good open backs are the new HD490 Pro

    Some great ideas in this. I thought using two compressors simultaneously intriguing, would the same result be produced if run separately, one after the other? Gonna try it, working in a master track editor like Sound Forge I have to tinker around a bit more compared to a DAW. I like that multiple LP/HP use of the same file also. It's great to see how these ideas cross different media, I've used that LP/HP idea in Photoshop to restore old photos!

    I really love proper gain staging because it helps the mix. I remember 15 years ago I mixed with hot channels on a digital mixer Yamaha O2R 96k resulting in the fader of the 2buss being lowered, mixing became a struggle (compared to analog) and the result just disappointed. Getting pre fader levels around -15dbfs made such a big difference and opened up everything.

I payed for a copy of Klangheim VUMT and i noticed in your video that you have your setting on the -14VU mixing preset and i noticed in my presets that there isn't one i can choose from the list. How do i get it? Do i need to download it? In the mixing presets there is only the Subtle Widening.
